Mega Millions Frequency Chart: What the Counts Really Mean

How to read a Mega Millions frequency chart: the hottest and coldest balls across 300 real draws, and the baseline those counts are measured against.

Over the last 300 Mega Millions draws, ball 49 has come up 30 times. Ball 7 has come up 12. Same pool, same machine, same three-hundred-draw stretch, and an eighteen-count gap between the busiest number and the quietest one. That gap is exactly what a frequency chart exists to show you, and it is also the part people misread most often.

What the chart is actually counting

A frequency chart looks like a ranking, so the instinct is to read it as a leaderboard: 49 in first place, 7 in last. But every bar on that chart is being measured against a number that is not zero, and once you know what that number is, the whole thing reads differently.

Work it out. Three hundred draws, five white balls each, is 1,500 individual ball-slots. Spread those across a 70-number pool and every number's fair share comes to about 21. The chart is not ranking numbers against nothing. It is showing you how far each one landed from roughly 21.

So is 30 a big number?

Against a baseline of 21, ball 49's count of 30 sits about 40 percent above its share, and ball 7's 12 sits about 44 percent below. Put that way it sounds dramatic. Put in the language the arithmetic prefers, both land roughly two standard deviations from the middle, and in a field of seventy numbers you would expect about three of them to finish that far out.

Which is the quietly satisfying thing about a frequency chart: the shape of the spread is itself a measurement. Three hundred draws do not deal every number an identical hand. They produce leaders and laggards in about the proportion the math says they should, and the current top three, 49 at 30 with 22 and 42 tied at 29, sit right where a 70-ball pool tends to put its leaders.

The Mega Ball is a different chart

The Mega Ball deserves its own reading, because it is a different shape of problem: one ball, drawn from 1 to 24, once per draw. Over that same 300-draw window that is 300 slots across 24 numbers, so the fair share there is about 12.5. With a pool less than a third the size, the whole chart runs tighter, and a Mega Ball a few counts above its share looks far more dramatic than the same surplus would on the 70-ball side.

Frequency, hot and cold, and longest gap

Three views, one dataset, and they answer genuinely different questions.

A number can be quiet on one view and unremarkable on another. Ball 7, the least-drawn of the last 300 draws at 12 appearances, is not the number carrying the longest gap. Different question, different answer.

  • Frequency is the raw count over whatever window you choose. Widen the window and the bars even out; narrow it and they scatter.
  • Hot and cold is that same count read as a leaderboard over a recent stretch, which is the view on the Mega Millions hot and cold page.
  • Longest gap ignores counts altogether and asks when a number was last seen. Ball 8 last appeared on March 6, 2026, forty-eight draws back, the longest current gap in the game.
