Mega Ball Frequency Chart: Why the Denominator Is 294, Not 300

Six of the 300 Mega Millions draws through September 8, 2026 produced a Mega Ball that is no longer in the machine. On April 5, 2025 the Mega Ball pool shrank from 1-to-25 down to 1-to-24, and that 300-draw window still reached back past that date.

So every Mega Ball figure below is counted out of 294, not 300. It is a small correction with a satisfying amount of arithmetic behind it, and it is the one detail most Mega Millions frequency tables quietly skip.

Why the denominator is 294, not 300

Today's pool holds 24 Mega Balls. A 300-draw window holds 300 Mega Ball slots, but six of them were filled by a number the pool has since dropped, so those six belong to none of the 24 numbers you are ranking. Count them into the baseline anyway and you hand the current pool credit for draws it was not part of.

Take them out and the arithmetic is clean: 294 slots shared across 24 numbers is a fair share of 12.25 appearances each. Leave them in and you get 12.5, which is close enough to look harmless and wrong for a reason worth naming. The denominator has to match the pool you are actually measuring.

Which Mega Ball is running hot?

Against that 12.25 baseline, Mega Ball 24 leads the window on 19 appearances, roughly 55 percent above its share, with 1, 12 and 16 tied behind it on 17. At the quiet end, 15 has come up five times and 5 has come up eight, which puts 15 at around 40 percent of what the format hands it.

A 24-number pool compresses everything, which is why those gaps read louder than they are. One Mega Ball is drawn per draw against 23 others, while each white ball competes in a 70-number field with five slots to go around. Three appearances above baseline is a far bigger visual event on the small chart than on the big one. Powerball runs its red ball the same way over a 1-to-26 pool, which is why special-ball charts in both games swing harder than their white-ball siblings.

Absences tell a different story again. Through September 8, 2026, the longest Mega Ball gap belonged to 18, last drawn on December 19, 2025, 75 draws back. Ball 5 sat second at 64 draws, last seen on January 27, 2026, and it was one of the few numbers on both the cold list and the long-gap list. With one ball drawn from 24, an ordinary spacing between a number's appearances is about 24 draws, so 18's absence ran roughly three times the typical interval.

Here is every Mega Ball in today's 1 to 24 pool, with how often it came up across the 300 draws from October 27, 2023 to September 8, 2026. Six of those draws produced a 25, the ball the pool dropped, so the 24 counts below add up to 294 and each number's fair share is 12.25.

Ball 18 is worth a second look: 13 appearances put it a touch above its share on count, and it still carried the longest gap on September 8. A count and a gap measure different things, which is how one ball can sit above its share and still be the one away longest.

The white balls answer to a different baseline

The white side was untouched by the pool change, so its window is a straight 300. Five balls from 1 to 70, three hundred times over, is 1,500 ball-slots spread across 70 numbers, which sets every white number's fair share at about 21.4 appearances.

Two numbers share the lead: 22 and 42, on 30 apiece, with 49 a single appearance behind on 29. The quietest are 7 on 12, then 9 on 14 and 45 on 15. Thirty is about 40 percent above the baseline and twelve is about 44 percent below it, which sounds dramatic until you remember that a 70-number field is expected to throw out a handful of results that far from the middle. The spread is the ordinary shape of 300 draws, not a signal hiding inside them.

The white gap list names different numbers again. Ball 11 had the longest absence at 49 draws, last seen on March 20, 2026, followed by 28 at 47 draws and 69 at 42. None of those three appeared on the cold list, and 7, the least-drawn white ball of the window, was not the one away longest. With five balls drawn per draw, a white number's ordinary spacing is about 14 draws, so 49 was a genuinely long absence by white-ball standards, and still shorter in raw draws than the Mega Ball's, which starts from a much wider ordinary spacing.

What 2,533 draws say about the jackpot

The archive behind the Mega Millions hub ran to 2,533 draws through September 8, 2026, with jackpot figures on record going back to 2002. Across seven sampled years between 2002 and 2024, the average jackpot comes out at $215,857,143.

Two caveats sit on that figure, and both are about the sample rather than the sum. Seven years is a coarse slice of a span running from 2002 to 2024. And any average built on a rolling jackpot is pulled hard by a few enormous runs, which are rare enough to move the mean and memorable enough that everyone remembers them. It is a useful order-of-magnitude figure and a terrible one to quote to the dollar, which is exactly why the number of sampled years is printed beside it.
